Craig Ward is a london-based graphic designer who makes art out of typography. Or rather, he feels typography is a form of art and so his art is of typography.

I have to say I agree with him. Like him, I also feel that words are indirectly pictures. After seeing his works, I find that alphabets can be placed together in an aesthetically pleasing way to form a picture or a piece of art. In his piece, “You’re just a face in the crowd”, he cleverly combines side profiles of humans together with his letters. I feel that this not only creates an amusing piece of work, it also strengthens his message altogether as people reading it are also able to understand his point in a visual way.

For “Ink”, Craig Ward also uses ink drops to flow out from beneath the letters that form INK. This creates an interesting piece as one can all the more relate actual liquid ink, with the word itself. I find that this method could be effective for visual learners when learning new words.

His works also display a high level of technical ability. The above A1 papercut illustration titled “Wish you were here” shows extreme sensitivity when carving such intricate flowers and alphabets from black paper.
